GAIÁS. The City of Culture.

The City of Culture of Galicia Foundation, an initiative of the Xunta de Galicia (the Galician regional government), was founded in 1999 and formed part of the Fundaciones de Interés Gallego. Its goal was to create a "multiuse, multidisciplinary, and unifying space that is conducive to cultural interaction".

The City of Culture is located in Santiago de Compostela and was designed to be a cultural hub dedicated to knowledge and contemporary creativity. Since its beginnings, it has acted as a tool that has allowed Galicia to tackle a key development area – its culture – in a comprehensive way, bringing together the past and the future.

City of Culture

After ten years of rich and intense debate, and a careful construction process, the Cidade da Cultura de Galicia opened in 2011, a project whose architecture itself was a form of art and culture.

The Cidade da Cultura welcomes all those who want to see the complex designed by Peter Eisenman.

Visitors have access to the spaces within the complex and its exterior, from the Hedjuk Towers to the main square. The Gaiás complex also offers guided tours for those who want to get up close and personal with the secrets of this unique architectural project.
